DERBY– Valley nonprofits raised more than $507,000 during the 2024 Great Give last week, making the 36-hour online giving event one of its most successful.
In all, donors gave more than $3.8 million supporting 550 nonprofits throughout the Valley and Greater New Haven region.
Of that total, just over $431,000 was donated to nonprofit organizations in Ansonia, Derby, Oxford, Seymour, and Shelton.
By the end of the fundraising event, 58 Valley-based organizations had participated, and 1,440 individual donations were made by people who live and/or work in the Valley.
Also, more than $234,000 of the Valley total was donated by 25 Valley Community Foundation (VCF) Donor Advised fundholders.

Explicitly Broken Rage Rooms recently opened at 61 Elizabeth St. Customers pay to hurl plates across a room, whack a computer monitor with a crowbar, bash beer bottles with a baseball bat and smash a TV with a sledgehammer.

DERBY– For the past 124 years, Derby Elks Lodge #571 has been lending a helping hand and spreading goodwill to Valley organizations and beyond from its headquarters on Elizabeth Street.
Whether they’re handing out scholarships to high school students, collecting food for Valley folks in need, or making Christmas morning brighter by ensuring local kids have presents under the tree, the Derby Elks’ charitable spirit knows no bounds.
“The Derby Lodge of Elks is a great community of people who work together to help others,” said Elks’ Esteemed Leading Knight Maria Blackwell in an email to the Valley Indy. “Working together to make a difference in the lives of others creates a bond between members.”
SEYMOUR — The Valley Indy is happy and humbled to report we exceeded our fundraising goal during The Great Give, a 36-hour online fundraiser benefiting more than 500 nonprofit groups in greater New Haven.
According to the unofficial tally, 140 people donated $12,086 to The Valley Indy. The goal was $10,000.
The Valley Indy is deeply grateful for the support.
The Valley Indy was live on the Internet for about 23 of the 36 hours, interviewing nonprofit leaders and local newsmakers. The entire livestream is posted below, in six parts.

The Sarah Riggs Humphreys-Mary Silliman Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) reminds everyone that Thursday, May 2, 2024 is the National Day of Prayer.
The National Day of Prayer is an annual observance held on the first Thursday of May inviting every one of all faiths to pray for the nation. The tradition began in 1775 when the First Continental Congress called for a national Day of Prayer, continued when President Lincoln called for a Day of Prayer in 1863 and was made into law in 1952 by a joint resolution of Congress and signed into law by President Truman.
